Rediscovering the Monterey Formation: What is the next Breakthrough
Panel Discussion
Pacific Section AAPG invites you to its first Special Panel Session, hosted by Kurt Neher, and comprised of esteemed geoscientists Rick Behl, Bryan Bell, Allegra Hosford Scheirer, and Dan Schwartz. This panel will discuss the current understandings and progress made concerning the Monterey Formation and its storied life as a source rock, reservoir, and record of the Miocene in California. Looking beyond the Monterey’s 100+ years of production, the panelists will discuss topics that may contribute to the next scientific or economic breakthrough. We invite all to attend and contribute to the discussion, as we brainstorm on the future of the enigmatic, fascinating, and hugely important Monterey Formation.

Potential Topics
- EIA Reserve estimates of the Monterey Formation as an unconventional play
- Petroleum System Interpretations and how they influence both conventional and unconventional plays
- New yet-to-be-discovered conventional traps, both structural and stratigraphic/diagenetic
- Utilizing Monterey understandings to exploit additional “shale” plays in California
- Utilizing other United States unconventional plays to help exploit the Monterey
